Hello from the MVYC Sail Fleet! |
About the Fleet
The Mount Vernon Yacht Club’s club racing is designed for casual sailboat racing and is perfect for sailors of all skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sailor, this is a great opportunity to learn about racing and improve your skills. Safety, fun, and camaraderie are our top priorities as we enjoy the thrill of competition and the challenge of improving our sailing abilities. The fleet hosts a small dinghy fleet of lasers, and larger keelboats ranging in size from 19’ to 40+ feet.
Sail Fleet schedules several leisure and racing opportunities each season. See below for the current schedule of events.
Below is the Sail Fleet schedule for Fall 2024. I've done my best to accommodate dates that people are available. I'd like to call particular attention to the final event. We'd love to have as many boats as possible join the Nov. 2 interclub regatta, where we will be hosting multiple boats from other clubs. Please look at your calendars and save dates accordingly. I am also looking for someone willing to plan/put on the after party for the regatta. The goal is to give a big warm welcome to our competitors from other clubs, many of whom will have travelled several hours to participate. This was a big event in the 70's, 80's and 90's as I understand it, so I'd like to reinvigorate that tradition, invite the full membership, and have a great evening.
Fall 2024 Schedule
September 29: Fall Sail
October 19: Keelboats for Kids, Learn to Sail Program for Ages 7+ (parents please email me at sailfleet@mvyc.net if you'd like your kids to participate)
October 27: Tune-up Race for Interclub
November 2: Interclub Regatta and After Party at MVYC
Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions
If you’re an MVYC member without a boat, but interested in crewing, you can contact the Sail Fleet Captain for more information. And for members seeking more competitive sailing, we also encourage you to participate in racing events hosted by other Potomac River sailing clubs, as well as on the Chesapeake Bay. Popular Potomac River events include the Leukemia Cup Regatta (hosted by Daingerfield Island Sailing Club), and the Master of the Potomac long distance race (hosted by Quantico Yacht Club), both in the fall. Chesapeake Bay sailing events include the Screwpile Challenge Regatta at Solomon’s Island in July and the Maryland Governor’s Cup Race in August. For more information on these and other events, visit the Potomac Yacht Racing Council website at https://pyrc.shutterfly.com.
It looks like another great racing season at MVYC, we hope to see you out on the water!
